Coming together as if following a recipe out of a cookbook, Warren Barlow Smith (a salesman), and Jeanne Smith (an accountant and financial manager), their son Barr (a Geology major), and daughter-in-law Ann (a Botany major), formed the family behind the vineyard estate and its wines. Their entry into wine production came as a result of making a small amount of 100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, originally only meant for family and friends. The winemaker at the time suggested they sell it instead, and they quickly sold all 25 cases! Today’s production is closer to 1500 cases: including two 100% Cabernet Sauvignons, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, a 100% Merlot, and a 100% Zinfandel.
The 2014 Barlow Merlot has a deep, concentrated violet-purple color with aromas of rich raspberry, ripe red cherry with an essence of sweet French vanilla. The palate is highly concentrated with deep and generous flavors of currants, blueberries and Bing cherries. The tannins are soft and luxurious and are a great counterpart to the sweet flavors of toasty oak.
